My research themes are:
(1) Institutional Research
For accreditation for medical education, the needs of IR center is growing.
(2) Instructional (Systems) Design
To make our education curriculum more effective, efficient and motivating, educational research is important. Not only the theories (both the learning and teaching) but also the methods (for example how to use LMS such as moodle and mahara, or how to do simulation based training more effective) are my expertise.
(3) Learning Analytics
When we use LMS for education, a lot of data is stored. To analyze and feedback the results are useful for both teachers and learners.

BMC medical education, 24(1) 840-840, Aug 6, 2024 Peer-reviewedBACKGROUND: Competency in the use of information science and technology (IST) is essential for medical students. This study identified learning objectives and competencies that correspond with low self-assessment related to use of IST and factors that improve such self-assessment among medical students. METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to sixth-year medical students across 82 medical schools in Japan between November 2022 and February 2023. RESULTS: Three learning objectives were identified as difficult for the students to achieve: (1) provide an overview of the regulations, laws, and guidelines related to IST in medicine; (2) discuss ethical issues, such as social disparities caused by the digital divide that may arise in the use of IST in medicine; and (3) understand IST related to medical care. Further, problem-based learning, engaging with IST beyond class, and learning approach impacted the students' acquisition of competencies related to IST. Furthermore, it was recognized that the competencies required by medical students may change over the course of an updated medical school curriculum. CONCLUSIONS: It is important for medical students to recognize the significance of learning, establishing active learning methods, and gaining experience in practically applying these competencies.

Journal of Japan Association for Simulation-based Education in Healthcare Professionals, 12 63-67, 2024In Japan, the importance of simulation education was acknowledged, and it was implemented in various pre- and post-graduate scenarios. However, there were instances where the execution of the simulation itself became the primary objective. Simulation education was a bridge, connecting learning from experiences in a secure learning environment to practical clinical applications. This panel discussion first provided an overview of the characteristics and relationships between "simulation" and the "clinical setting." Subsequently, it introduced (1) a clinical clerkship program design to facilitate real-world practice, (2) blended simulation education, and (3) the application of the Goal-Oriented Learning Design Method (GOLD method) to foster nursing practice skills. In the comprehensive discussion, Considering The New World Kirkpatrick Model as a reference, introducing simulation education and contemplating its outcomes can be an effective means to enhance the connection with the practical field. By thinking about the outcomes when introducing simulation to achieve specific goals, it becomes possible to strengthen the link with the on-site application.

Applied Ergonomics, 109 103987-103987, May, 2023 Peer-reviewedTo maintain the effectiveness of the training (1st-Training Session: 1st-TS) to accurate describe facts in the medical incident reports (IRs) in Japanese, a refresher TS was designed and its effectiveness was examined. First, textual analysis showed that IRs' accuracy significantly decreased six months after the 1st-TS. Based on this result, the refresher TS was designed and conducted with 64 residents. To verify the refresher TS' effectiveness, IRs after the 1st-TS, six months later, and after the refresher TS were compared via text analysis. The results showed that the refresher TS restored the description rate of patient's background, safety check procedures, original work procedures, information on equipment used, reporter's actions, and post-incident response. The questionnaire was also administered and showed that the refresher TS contributed to residents' motivation to learn about IRs. In conclusion, the refresher TS contributed to sustaining the effect of the 1st-TS on accurately describing IRs.

Applied Ergonomics, 102 103770-103770, Jul, 2022 Peer-reviewedWe assessed whether training on writing readable and accurate medical incident reports (IRs) improves the quality of fact description. In this training, 124 residents created fictional IRs. We provided tips, including using When, Where, Who, What, Why, How. We compared the fictional IRs with and without tips, and the trainees' and non-trainees' IRs submitted in the first five months after training. Results indicated that the subject words in IRs were more clarified and the readability was improved. The fictional IRs using tips were more accurate, with increased descriptions of the patient's background, reporter's actions, team members' actions and conversations, safety check procedures, result of the error, and post-incident response. The reporter's actions, work procedures, and environment were more clarified in the trainees' IRs than in the non-trainees' IRs. This training may help analysts comprehend the sequence of and underlying factors for reporter's actions based on IRs.

The Asia Pacific Scholar, 6(4) 49-64, Oct 5, 2021Introduction: Previous studies indicate that professional identity formation (PIF), the formation of a self-identity with the internalised values and norms of professionalism, may influence self-regulated learning (SRL). However, it remains unclear whether a PIF-oriented intervention can improve SRL in clinical education. The aim of this study was to explore whether a PIF-oriented mentoring platform improves SRL in a clinical clerkship. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted. Forty-one students in a community-based clinical clerkship (CBCC) used a PIF-oriented mentoring platform. They articulated the values and norms of professionalism in a professional identity essay, elaborated on future professional self-image, and reflected on their current compared to future selves. They made a study plan while referring to PIF-based self-reflection and completed it. The control group of 41 students completed CBCC without the PIF-oriented mentoring platform. Changes in SRL between the two groups were quantitatively compared using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. We explore how PIF elements in the platform affected SRL by qualitative analysis of questionnaire and interview data. Results: A moderate improvement in intrinsic goal orientation (p = 0.005, ε2 = 0.096) and a mild improvement in critical thinking (p = 0.041, ε2 = 0.051) were observed in the PIF-oriented platform group. Qualitative analysis revealed that the PIF-oriented platform fostered professional responsibility as a key to expanding learning goals. Gaining authentic knowledge professionally fostered critical thinking, and students began to elaborate knowledge in line with professional task processes. Conclusion: A PIF-oriented mentoring platform helped students improve SRL during a clinical clerkship.

BMC Medical Education, 21(1) 30-30, 2021 Peer-reviewed<title>Abstract</title>
<title>Background</title> Developing self-regulated learning in preclinical settings is important for future lifelong learning. Previous studies indicate professional identity formation, i.e., formation of self-identity with internalized values and norms of professionalism, might promote self-regulated learning. We designed a professional identity formation-oriented reflection and learning plan format, then tested effectiveness on raising self-regulated learning in a preclinical year curriculum.
<title>Methods</title> A randomized controlled crossover trial was conducted using 112 students at Jichi Medical University. In six one-day problem-based learning sessions in a 7-month pre-clinical year curriculum, Groups A (n = 56, female 18, mean age 21.5y ± 0.7) and B (n = 56, female 11, mean age 21.7y ± 1.0) experienced professional identity formation-oriented format: Group A had three sessions with the intervention format in the first half, B in the second half. Between-group identity stages and self-regulated learning levels were compared using professional identity essays and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire.
<title>Results</title> Two-level regression analyses showed no improvement in questionnaire categories but moderate improvement of professional identity stages over time (R2 = 0.069), regardless of timing of intervention.
<title>Conclusions</title> Professional identity moderately forms during the pre-clinical year curriculum. However, neither identity nor self-regulated learning is raised significantly by limited intervention.
