American journal of veterinary research 1-11 2024年10月10日OBJECTIVE: Use finite element analysis to evaluate the biomechanical effects of spinal decompression procedures in healthy Beagle dogs, comparing individualized mini-hemilaminectomy-corpectomy (iMHC), mini-hemilaminectomy, partial lateral corpectomy (PLC), and hemilaminectomy. METHODS: A finite element model of the L1-L2 functional spinal unit was generated using CT data. For each decompression model, loads were applied in 0.2-Nm steps (maximum, 2.0 Nm) in 6 directions: flexion, extension, right and left lateral bending, and right and left axial rotation. The L1 spinous process tip displacement angle was quantified numerically. RESULTS: Among the 4 techniques, mini-hemilaminectomy exhibited the smallest displacement angles across all directions. Hemilaminectomy exhibited the largest displacement angles in extension, flexion, right rotation, and left rotation across all techniques. Left and right lateral bending displacement angles were marginally larger for iMHC than for hemilaminectomy at 0.4 Nm; however, at 2.0 Nm, displacement angles were similar. CONCLUSIONS: Mini-hemilaminectomy minimizes functional spinal unit instability to the greatest extent. Hemilaminectomy is more unstable than iMHC and PLC in flexion, extension, and rotation. Mini-hemilaminectomy-corpectomy and PLC are more unstable than hemilaminectomy in lateral bending, with iMHC being slightly more unstable than PLC or nearly equal. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Mini-hemilaminectomy minimizes instability to the greatest extent in cases of ventrolateral spinal compression. In cases of ventral spinal compression, iMHC may be preferable to PLC for providing equivalent stability without impeding spinal cord visualization, but both techniques can cause instability depending on loading direction, so careful attention to postoperative instability is necessary when excessive vertebral body resection is involved.

Journal of feline medicine and surgery 26(10) 1098612X241276393 2024年10月OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of pelvic osteotomy and ventral fixation of the ischium using cortical screws and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) for feline pelvic canal stenosis (PCS) associated with malunion after conservative management of pelvic fractures. METHODS: Surgical pelvic enlargement was performed for PCS in six cats. The medical records, including information on the patients, surgical procedures, defecation and complications, were reviewed. The sacral index (SI) and colonic:lumbar:vertebral ratio (CLVR) were evaluated based on pre- and postoperative radiographs. RESULTS: This study included five castrated male cats and one spayed female cat. Postoperative improvements in constipation and defecatory difficulty were noted in all cases. The postoperative SI was significantly higher (mean 0.93, range 0.72-1.13) than the preoperative SI (mean 0.59, range 0.45-0.74) (P <0.001). However, no statistically significant change was found in the CLVR preoperatively and up to 3 months postoperatively. A successful union of the ilium was observed, without implant failures. One case developed necrosis of the pubic surgical wound. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study indicated the potential benefits of pelvic osteotomy and ventral fixation of the pelvic floor using screws and PMMA for achieving pelvic cavity enlargement in treating feline PCS associated with defecatory problems.

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T 2024年8月29日OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for refracture after radial union in small-breed dogs. STUDY DESIGN: In our retrospective study, medical records of radial-ulnar fracture cases in small dogs treated with plates and screws were reviewed. General information and postoperative course (days until confirmed radial fracture healing, with or without ulnar union, time to final follow-up, with or without plate removal and refracture) were recorded. The fracture line location, screw positions, radial thickness and width, and pixel values throughout the postoperative periods were obtained from the radiographs. The affected limbs were classified into non-plate removal (P) and plate removal (R) groups. RESULTS: Refracture occurred in 5 of the 141 limbs at the most distal screw in the P group and 5 of the 40 limbs at the same site as the initial fracture in the R group. Multivariate analysis indicated that refracture was linked to the amount of relative change with growth in the position of the most distal screw in the P group, with pixel value and radial thickness ratios at the same site as the initial fracture in the R group. CONCLUSION: Reducing the screw diameter relative to the radial width to the appropriate extent may be considered in cases where the screw positioned at the most distal end of the radius is expected to be relatively proximal as the distal radius grows; not removing the plate may be considered in cases with a decreased radial thickness or bone mineral density beneath the plate during plate removal.

Journal of comparative pathology 213 73-77 2024年8月 査読有りA 10-year-old spayed mixed breed dog presented with severe neurological signs. Computed tomography revealed a cranial mediastinal mass, osteolysis of the right second rib and second thoracic vertebra, tracheobronchial and mesenteric lymph node enlargement, pneumonia and pleural effusion. Magnetic resonance imaging detected lesions in the white matter of the right frontal lobe and left cerebral hemisphere with contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images showing demarcated enhancement. On cut section, the surface of the right cerebral frontal lobe and left cerebral hemisphere corticomedullary junctions were indistinct and the white matter was discoloured. Microscopically, multicentric granulomatous inflammation was seen in the brain, cranial mediastinal mass, masses on the right second rib, tracheobronchial and mesenteric lymph nodes, heart, kidneys, lungs and oesophagus. Necrosis and hyaline fungal structures were frequently observed in the centre of the granulomas. These fungi had septae, Y-shaped branching and were 2-3 μm in width. Sequence analysis of DNA from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples identified the fungi as Schizophyllum commune. Based on these findings, this case was diagnosed as disseminated S. commune infection. This is the first report of granulomatous encephalitis caused by S. commune in a dog.

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T 2024年3月6日OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress changes in the radii beneath the locking plates (LP) of dogs implanted with LP using finite element analysis (FEA). STUDY DESIGN: The study included radii harvested from eight dogs. After computed tomography (CT) scans of the forelimb, the articular surface of the radius was fixed using resin. Material tests were conducted to identify the yield and fracture points and for verification with FEA. The CT data of the radius were imported into FEA software. The radii were classified into three groups based on the placement of the LP (nonplate placement, intact group; 1 mm above the radial surface, LP + 1 mm group; 3 mm above the radial surface, LP + 3 mm group). Equivalent, maximum, and minimum principal stresses and minimum principal strain were measured after FEA at the radial diaphysis beneath the plate. RESULTS: In shell elements, the LP + 1 mm and LP + 3 mm groups showed a significantly lower maximum principal stress compared with the intact group. In solid elements, the LP + 1 mm and LP + 3 mm groups showed a significantly higher equivalent stress and a significantly lower maximum principal stress compared with the intact group. CONCLUSION: When an axial load is applied to the radius, LP placement reduces the tension stress on the cortical bone of the radius beneath the plate, possibly related to implant-induced osteoporosis and bone formation in the cortical bone beneath the plate.

BMC Veterinary Research 20(1) 2024年2月24日Abstract Background Cranial closing wedge osteotomy (CCWO) is a functional stabilisation technique for cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) ruptures. This biomechanical study aimed to evaluate the influence of CCWO on the stability of the stifle joint. Eighteen Beagle stifle joints were divided into two groups: control and CCWO. The stifle joints were analyzed using a six-degree-of-freedom robotic joint biomechanical testing system. The joints were subjected to 30 N in the craniocaudal (CrCd) drawer and proximal compression tests and 1 Nm in the internal–external (IE) rotation test. Each test was performed with an extension position, 135°, and 120° of joint angle. Results The stifle joints were tested while the CrCLs were intact and then transected. In the drawer test, the CCWO procedure, CrCL transection, and stifle joint flexion increased CrCd displacement. The CCWO procedure and CrCL transection showed an interaction effect. In the compression test, the CCWO procedure decreased and CrCL transection and stifle joint flexion increased displacement. In the IE rotation test, CCWO, CrCL transection, and stifle joint flexion increased the range of motion. Conclusions CCWO was expected to provide stability against compressive force but does not contribute to stability in the drawer or rotational tests. In the CCWO-treated stifle joint, instability during the drawer test worsened with CrCL transection. In other words, performing the CCWO procedure when the CrCL function is present is desirable for stabilizing the stifle joint.

American Journal of Veterinary Research 1-8 2023年9月5日Abstract OBJECTIVE To verify the validity of finite element analysis (FEA) predictions obtained from a canine lumbar segment model in comparison with experimental biomechanical testing results from the same subjects. ANIMALS 6 healthy beagle dogs were euthanized for other purposes. METHODS The L1–2 and L5–6 segments were harvested from euthanized animals and subjected to rotation tests and compression tests, respectively, using both ex vivo mechanical testing and FEA. For each method, we recorded the maximum torque value and angle of vertebral body rotation at rupture observed in rotation tests, as well as the maximum stress value and displacement of the vertebral body endplate at rupture measured from compression tests. We then calculated Pearson’s correlation coefficient to determine correlations between the angle of gyration and displacement at rupture determined by mechanical testing and FEA. The study started on March 26, 2021, and ended on March 18, 2023. RESULTS For the rotation test, correlation coefficients for the maximum torque and rotation angle of the vertebral body at rupture were r = 0.92 and 0.96, respectively. For the compression test, correlation coefficients for the maximum stress and displacement of the vertebral body endplate at rupture were r = 0.73 and 0.94, respectively. All results showed strong correlations between the FEA predictions and ex vivo mechanical test results. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These findings suggest that FEA predictions are sufficiently reliable for ex vivo mechanical test results for biomechanical studies of canine lumbar segment models.

The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne 64(9) 823-827 2023年9月A 5-month-old male domestic shorthair cat was presented with severe bilateral hind-limb deformities that caused the cat to walk on the dorsal aspect of the metatarsals. Computed tomography (CT) images revealed that the calcaneus was externally rotated, and the distal end of the calcaneus was turned medially to the talus in both hind limbs. The cat was diagnosed with twisted leg deformity, a congenital tarsal hyperextension deformity (clubfoot). Based on CT images, closing wedge ostectomy was done at the level of the tarsometatarsal joint with the wider part facing laterally. Partial transection of the common calcaneal tendon was not performed. Nine weeks after surgery, the cat was able to walk and jump, with its paws correctly placed on the ground, despite the limited range of motion in the tarsal joints. Based on radiographs with maximum tarsal flexion, the angle of the partial tarsal arthrodesis limited the range of motion. This is apparently the first case report describing CT images and closing wedge ostectomy in a cat with twisted leg deformity. Key clinical message: This article reports the findings obtained from CT imaging of a cat with twisted leg deformity. The current case was successfully managed by closing wedge ostectomy without partial transection of the common calcaneal tendon.

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association 1-9 2023年5月30日OBJECTIVE: To compare the prognosis of small dogs with cervical intervertebral disc herniation (C-IVDH) when treated with ventral slot decompression (VSD) alone or with concomitant vertebral fixation (VF). ANIMALS: Small dogs (n = 303) weighing < 15 kg diagnosed with C-IVDH and treated with VSD. PROCEDURES: We recorded signalment, cervical myelopathy grade, surgical site, use of VF, degree of adjacent disc degeneration, recovery, recurrence, recurrence site, and postoperative course, including the time elapsed from recovery to recurrence. We examined factors associated with recovery and recurrence during the 30-month postoperative period using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: VF did not affect recovery (P = .79). However, nonchondrodystrophic breeds had poorer recovery (OR, 5.89; P = .023) than chondrodystrophic breeds, and a higher preoperative cervical myelopathy grade (grade 3 or 4) was associated with poorer recovery (OR, 7.09 or 3.46, respectively; P = .019 or .042, respectively), compared with grade 1. VF did not affect recurrence (P = .79); however, increasing age was associated with recurrence (OR, 1.79; P = .001). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In small dogs weighing < 15 kg, there was no difference in postoperative recovery and recurrence rates after VSD with or without concomitant VF. Therefore, in small dogs with C-IVDH, even if the slot volume is increased to remove sufficient disc material during VSD, a good prognosis can be achieved with or without VF.

American journal of veterinary research 1-9 2023年5月29日OBJECTIVE: To determine the signalment and musculoskeletal morphology of small-breed dogs affected by medial patellar luxation (MPL) grade IV based on the age of the CT scan. ANIMALS: 40 small-breed dogs (54 limbs) with MPL grade IV. PROCEDURES: Dogs that had undergone corrective surgery for MPL grade IV and had performed CT of the hind limb before surgery were included. Signalment (age, body weight, sex, laterality, and breed) and concomitant cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) were recorded. Femoral inclination angle, anatomical lateral distal femoral angle (aLDFA), femoral torsion angle, quadriceps muscle length to femoral length ratio (QML/FL), and patellar ligament length to patellar length were obtained by CT images. The dogs were categorized into 2 groups based on their age at the time of the CT scan, the skeletally immature group and the skeletally matured group. Signalment and group were included in the multiple regression analysis to determine the factors associated with each measurement parameter. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the risk of CrCL concomitant with age. RESULTS: The multiple regression model demonstrated that the group was associated with the value of aLDFA and QML/FL. aLDFA was higher, and QML/FL was lower in group SI than in group SM. CrCLR was present in 5/54 limbs (9.2%), with a mean age of 70.8 months and it was associated with increasing age. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In Singleton's classification, dogs classified as grade IV can be categorized into 2 groups based on musculoskeletal morphology and pathophysiology: the skeletally immature and skeletally matured types.

Veterinary and Comparative Orthopaedics and Traumatology 2023年3月20日Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to determine the factors related to functional patella alta, with which the proximodistal patellar position exceeds the reference range of healthy small dogs proximally when the stifle is at full extension. Study Design Mediolateral-view radiographs of dogs weighing less than 15 kg were obtained and classified into the medial patellar luxation (MPL) and control groups. The reference range of the proximodistal patellar position was determined from the control group. In both groups, a patellar position exceeding this reference range proximally was considered functional patella alta. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors related to functional patella alta. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was made for each factor. Results Overall, radiographs of 127 stifles of 75 dogs were obtained. Eleven stifles in the MPL group and one stifle in the control group were determined to be functional patella alta. The factors associated with functional patella alta included a greater full extension angle of the stifle joint, longer patellar ligament, and shorter femoral trochlear length. The full extension angle of the stifle joint had the biggest area under the ROC curve. Conclusion Mediolateral radiographs of the stifle joint in full extension are clinically important in dogs with MPL because some dogs might have a proximally positioned patella that is recognizable only when the stifles are extended.

Open Veterinary Journal 13(12) 1708-1708 2023年Background: We previously reported that myocardial fibrosis may be one of the causes of left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction in dogs with hyperglucocorticism (HGC). The detailed mechanism by which myocardial fibrosis of the left ventricle occurs in dogs with hyperglucocorticism (HGC) remains unclear. Aim: This study investigated the mechanism by which HGC causes fibrosis of the left ventricle. Methods: The impacts of HGC on the heart by comparing samples obtained from high-dose glucocorticoid-treated (P) and untreated (C) dogs. The P group included healthy Beagle dogs (n=6) treated with prednisolone (2 mg/kg, bid, po) for 84 days, and the C group included healthy Beagle dogs (n=6) euthanized for unrelated reasons. In three of the P group dogs, serum was collected before the start of administration (Day 0) and on Day 84 to measure angiotensin II concentrations and oxidative stress markers (8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG), NADPH oxidase, and superoxide levels). Samples of the left ventricular free wall (LVFW), right ventricular free wall (RVFW), interventricular septum (IVS), and aortic root were harvested from both groups (n = 6 for each group). Using these tissue samples, angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), 8OHdG, and transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) immunohistochemical stains were performed. Results: The blood NADPH oxidase concentration was significantly higher (P=0.027) in the P group 84 days after initiation of the medication compared to that before prednisolone treatment. By contrast, there was no significant difference in serum angiotensin II (P=0.450), 8OHdG (P=0.068), and superoxide (P=0.057) concentrations. The positive staining rates of AT1R, 8OHdG, and TGFβ1 in the heart (LVFW, RVFW, IVS, and aortic root) were significantly higher in the P group than those in the C group. Conclusion: Angiotensin II and oxidative stress in HGC may cause left ventricular fibrosis in dogs.

Open Veterinary Journal 13(2) 150-150 2023年Background: In recent years, left ventricular hypertrophy and cardiac dysfunction have been reported in human and canine patients with hypercortisolism (HAC) and in dogs treated experimentally with high-dose prednisolone. However, to our knowledge, there have been no reports on the effects of hyperglucocorticism (HGC) on the mitral valve (MV). Aim: This study aimed to compare the MV in dogs treated with high-dose prednisolone with that in healthy dogs to investigate the effects of HGC on the MV.Methods: We investigated the effects of HGC on the MV by comparing samples obtained from high-dose glucocorticoid-treated (P) and healthy (C) dogs. The P group included healthy Beagle dogs (n = 6) treated with prednisolone (2 mg/kg, bid, po) for 84 days and the C group included healthy Beagle dogs (n = 6) euthanized for unrelated reasons. The anterior and posterior mitral leaflets (AML and PML, respectively) from both groups were harvested and stained with hematoxylin–eosin, Alcian blue, and Masson trichome. Additionally, adiponectin (ADN) and glucocorticoid receptor immunohistochemistry were performed. Histological evaluation was performed in the atrialis, spongiosa, fibrosa, and all layers of the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the AML and PML. Results: The proportion of the spongiosa layer thickness to the total thickness was higher in the P than in the C group (proximal and middle AML). However, the proportion of the fibrosa layer thickness to the total thickness was lower in the P than in the C group (middle PML). Areas of acidic sulfated mucosubstance deposition were smaller in the fibrosa layer and all layers (middle AML), while those of collagen deposition were smaller in the spongiosa and total layers (proximal and middle AML), in the P than in the C group. Additionally, ADN expression in the spongiosa layer was higher in the P than in the C group (middle AML). Conclusion: These findings suggest that long-term administration of synthetic glucocorticoids induces histological changes in the MV. These changes may lead to MV dysfunction in dogs with HGC.

Open Veterinary Journal 13(3) 262-262 2023年Background: Tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) and cranial closing wedge ostectomy (CCWO) are common treatments for cranial cruciate ligament disease. These two techniques mainly differ in whether the proximal tibial fragment contains the attachment site of the patellar ligament. Currently, there are no reports comparing how these techniques affect the patellofemoral joint.Aim: This ex vivo study aimed to compare the effects of TPLO and CCWO on the patellar position and moment arm in healthy Beagles. Methods: TPLO and CCWO were performed on each stifle in six cadavers of Beagles. Pre- and postoperative mediolateral radiographs with the stifle angle at approximately 90° were obtained. The modified Blumensaat index (MBI), patellar ligament length to patella length ratio (PLL:PL), and patellar moment arm (PMA) were measured in each radiograph. Mixed-model multiple regression analyses for the MBI, PLL:PL, and PMA, with the surgical procedure as the independent variable, was then performed. The joint angle was included as an independent variable for MBI, and PMA.Results: The PLL:PL was decreased after TPLO. Additionally, the PLL:PL after TPLO was significantly lower than that after CCWO. The MBI decreased with flexion. Postoperative MBI values were decreased for both procedures, with lower values after CCWO than after TPLO. The PMA values decreased with flexion. Postoperative values for both procedures were decreased in the PMA, with the values being lower after CCWO than after TPLO.Conclusion: Both TPLO and CCWO affect the patellofemoral joint. Compared with TPLO, CCWO produced greater downward traction on the patella. Therefore, CCWO may be used to correct the patellar alta and treat cranial cruciate ligament disease.

BMC veterinary research 18(1) 397-397 2022年11月12日BACKGROUND: Pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism (PDH) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in veterinary medicine. However, there are few reports on pituitary tumor apoplexy (PTA) in dogs and no reports on its surgical intervention in veterinary medicine. Accordingly, the appropriate treatment is unknown. Herein, a case of PDH and PTA in a dog treated surgically is described. CASE PRESENTATION: A mongrel female dog (spayed; age, 8 years and 8 months; weight, 6.1 kg) with persistently elevated alkaline phosphatase underwent adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation testing (post-stimulation cortisol: 20.5 μg/dL), abdominal ultrasonography (adrenal gland thickness: left, 5.7 mm; right, 8.1 mm), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (pituitary-to-brain ratio [PBR], 0.61) at the referral hospital, resulting in a diagnosis of PDH (day 0). On day 9, the dog visited XXXX for the preparation of pituitary surgery to treat PDH. However, on days 10-15, the dog developed a loss of energy and appetite, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and a decreased level of consciousness. However, on day 16, the dog's condition recovered. A preoperative MRI scan performed on day 52 (the day of surgery) showed apoplexy in the dorsal pituitary region (PBR, 0.68). Based on the PTA findings, the risks of surgery were described to the owner, and approval was obtained. At the time of trans-sphenoidal surgery, a partial pituitary resection was performed with preservation of the PTA area due to adhesions between the PTA area of the right side of the pituitary and surrounding tissues. The resected pituitary tissue was diagnosed as an ACTH-producing adenoma, with necrotic and hemorrhagic findings. As of day 290, endogenous ACTH and cortisol levels did not exceed the reference range. CONCLUSIONS: The acute signs that occurred on days 10-15 were most likely caused by PTA. Therefore, when signs similar to those detected in acute hypoadrenocorticism are observed in dogs with PDH, it is necessary to include PTA as a differential diagnosis. Trans-sphenoidal surgery may be effective in PDH-affected dogs that develop PTA, but careful attention should be paid to tissue adhesions secondary to hemorrhage that may occur after PTA.

Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine 2022年8月19日 査読有りThree young adult cats with intermittent spinal hyperesthesia and paraparesis and diagnosed with spinal epidural arteriovenous fistula are described. In all 3 cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed focal dilatation of the veins in the epidural space of the thoracic spinal cord, whereas computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed dilatation and enhancement from the intercostal vein to the azygos vein at the same site in the arterial phase. Dorsal laminectomy and occlusion of the interarcuate branches running across the dorsal aspect of the spinal cord were performed in all 3 cats to decompress the spinal cord, which resulted in a remission of clinical signs and no recurrence during 14 to 40 months of follow-up after surgery in all cases.

Case Reports in Veterinary Medicine 2022 1-7 2022年3月25日Background. An 8-year-old, 18.9 kg, male, intact Kai Ken with a femoral shaft fracture experienced recurrent implant breakage after two fracture reductions using an internal fixator. Objectives. This case report is aimed at using a three-dimensional (3-D) printer to diagnose residual femoral rotational deviation. Implant failures and malunion occurred after two attempts at synthesis. Thus, a 3-D model was designed for preoperative planning of a third surgery. Methods. To evaluate the alignment in the postoperative state after the second surgery, we removed a broken plate from the affected limb. Subsequently, a computed tomography image produced a bone replica using 3-D printing. The distal fragment was fixed and rotated externally by 42°. In addition to correcting the rotational deformity of the femur, we used an intramedullary pin and two locking plates to stabilize the proximal and distal femoral fracture segments. Results. The bone union was confirmed four months after surgery, and no postoperative complications were observed 11 months after surgery. Conclusion. 3-D printing is a valuable tool that increases the accuracy of presurgical planning.

PLOS ONE 17(1) e0262206-e0262206 2022年1月21日This study aimed to determine the effects of long-term and high-dose administration of glucocorticoids (GCs) on the histological and mechanical properties of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) in healthy beagle dogs. A synthetic corticosteroid at 2 mg/kg every 12 h was administered for 84 days in nine dogs (18 CrCLs) (GC group). Twenty CrCLs from 12 healthy male beagles were used as the normal control (control group). CrCLs were histologically examined (n = 12 in the GC group and n = 14 in the control group) using hematoxylin-eosin, Alcian-Blue, Elastica-Eosin stains, and immunohistological staining of type 1 collagen and elastin. An additional 12 CrCLs were mechanically tested (n = 6 in the GC and n = 6 in the control groups) to determine failure pattern, maximum tensile strength, maximum stress, elastic modulus, and stress and strain at the transition point. The histological examination revealed a significant increase in interfascicular area and fibrillar disorientation at the tibial attachment in both groups. The ratios of mucopolysaccharide-positive area and positive areas of elastic fibers were significantly higher in the control group than in the GC group. The biomechanical examination demonstrated significantly lower stress at the transition point in the GC group than in the control group. The present study results indicate that high-dose corticosteroids may affect metabolism, such as mucopolysaccharides and elastic fibers production, although the effect on type 1 collagen production is small. These changes of the extracellular matrix had a small effect on the strength of the ligament. This study suggested that the ligamentous changes associated with GC are different from the degeneration observed in spontaneous canine CrCL disease.

Journal of veterinary internal medicine 36(1) 29-38 2022年1月BACKGROUND: Hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) is a common endocrine disorder in dogs; however, there are no reports on the use of the corticotropin-releasing hormone test (CRHT) to differentiate between pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) and cortisol-producing adrenal tumors (CPATs), both causative of HAC. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of CRHT as a tool to differentiate between PDH and CPAT in dogs and to determine the reference intervals for CRHT in healthy, PDH, and CPAT dogs. ANIMALS: Dogs diagnosed with PDH (n = 21), CPAT (n = 6), and healthy beagle dogs (n = 33). METHODS: This prospective study included dogs with a definitive diagnosis of PDH and CPAT and healthy beagle dogs, in which CRHT was performed, were prospectively evaluated. We investigated the correlations of CRHT (endogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone [ACTH] concentration, endogenous ACTH concentration [EAC], and poststimulation ACTH concentration [PAC]) with pituitary-to-brain ratio (PBR) (in PDH) and with indices of adrenal ultrasonography (smaller and larger adrenal gland dorsoventral thickness in PDH and CPAT). RESULTS: For EAC, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.95, with a cutoff value of 26.3 pg/mL (sensitivity: 90.62%, specificity: 87.50%). The AUC for PAC was 0.96 with a cutoff value of 54.5 pg/mL (sensitivity: 100.00%, specificity: 66.67%). The 95% reference interval for CRHT in healthy (control) dogs ranged 5.00 to 79.8 pg/mL (1.10-17.57 pmol/L) for EAC, and 1.92 to 153.42 pg/mL (0.42-33.78 pmol/L) for PAC. There was no significant correlation between PBR and CRHT, nor adrenal size and CRHT. Veterinary and Comparative Orthopaedics and Traumatology 2021年9月21日<title>Abstract</title> Objective The aim of this study was to clarify the histological effects of tibial plateau levelling osteotomy on cranial cruciate ligament degeneration induced by excessive tibial plateau angle. Study Design Five female Beagles were used to bilaterally create excessive tibial plateau angle models surgically. A second tibial plateau levelling osteotomy was performed 11 months after the first surgery on the right stifle (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy group), and a sham operation that did not change the tibial plateau angle was performed on the left stifle (excessive tibial plateau angle group). At 6 months after the second surgery, the dogs were euthanatized. The cranial cruciate ligament was stained with haematoxylin–eosin to assess the cell density, Alcian-Blue to assess proteoglycans and Elastica-Eosin to assess elastic fibres, and immunohistochemically stained to assess type I (COL1) and type II collagen and SRY-type HMG box 9 (SOX9) expression. Results In each group, the cranial cruciate ligament degeneration, especially on the tibial side, including the presence of Alcian-Blue- and Elastica-Eosin-positive regions, decreased in COL1-positive regions, and enhancement of SOX9 expression was observed. Besides, compared with the tibial plateau levelling osteotomy group, the excessive tibial plateau angle group showed increases in Alcian-Blue- and Elastica-Eosin-positive regions and a decrease in the COL1-positive regions. Conclusion The results suggested that excessive tibial plateau angle-induced cranial cruciate ligament degeneration can be suppressed by reducing the biomechanical load on the cranial cruciate ligament by performing tibial plateau levelling osteotomy.

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T 2021年8月3日OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate implant-induced osteoporosis (IIO) development in toy breed dogs treated using internal fixation with digital radiographs as the index of pixel values. STUDY DESIGN: There were 226 cases (236 limbs) of toy breed dogs with radial-ulnar fractures. Pixel values were measured on radiographs immediately, 2 weeks and 1 to 12 months after surgery. The ratio of pixel values (PVR) represented the bone mineral areal density based on the humeral condyle in the same image. The dogs were grouped based on the fixation methods, age and status of destabilization. RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in the PVR at 1 to 12 months postoperatively for all cases. There were not any significant differences in PVR of antebrachial fractures between those repaired with plates using locking head screws, cortex screws or a combination of locking and cortex screws. Implant-induced osteoporosis persisted at 1 to 12 months postoperatively in dogs aged ≧6 months, while the PVR increased after 3 months in dogs aged <6 months. Based on the destabilization method, there was a significant increase in the PVR at 3 months in the plate removal group. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that IIO occurs in small dogs treated with plates and screws. Moreover, patients aged < 6 months showed an early postoperative recovery of bone mineral areal density. Further, screw and plate removal could contribute to the recovery of bone mineral areal density.

American journal of veterinary research 82(6) 459-466 2021年6月OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of an excessive tibial plateau angle (TPA) and change in compressive load on tensile forces experienced by the cranial cruciate, medial collateral, and lateral collateral ligaments (CCL, MCL, and LCL, respectively) of canine stifle joints. SAMPLE: 16 cadaveric stifle joints from 16 orthopedically normal Beagles. PROCEDURES: Stifle joints were categorized into unchanged (mean TPA, 30.4°) and excessive (mean TPA before and after modification, 31.2° and 41.1°, respectively) TPA groups. The excessive TPA group underwent a TPA-increasing procedure (curvilinear osteotomy of the proximal aspect of the tibia) to achieve the desired TPA. A robotic system was used to apply a 30- and 60-N compressive load to specimens. The craniomedial band of the CCL, caudolateral band of the CCL, MCL, and LCL were sequentially transected; load application was repeated after each transection. Orthogonal force components were measured in situ. Forces on ligaments were calculated after repeated output force measurements as the contribution of each component was eliminated. RESULTS: Increasing the compressive load increased tensile forces on the craniomedial and caudolateral bands of the CCL, but not on the MCL or LCL, in specimens of both groups. At the 60-N load, tensile force on the craniomedial band, but not other ligaments, was greater for the excessive TPA group than for the unchanged TPA group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that stress on the CCL may increase when the compressive load increases. The TPA-increasing procedure resulted in increased tensile force on the CCL at a 60-N compressive load without affecting forces on the MCL or LCL.

The proximodistal patellar position in the MPL group was not significantly different from that in the control group despite the trend towards a distally positioned patella (p = 0.073). Dogs with MPL did not have a proximally positioned patella compared with dogs without MPL. Although hindlimbs with MPL had a shorter trochlea than those without patellar luxation, this difference did not appear to be sufficient to displace the patellar position proximally in small dogs, possibly compensated by increased trochlear angle relative to the femur.

The Journal of veterinary medical science 83(1) 84-93 2021年1月14日This study aimed to assess the structural and functional effects of long-term hyperglucocorticoidemia on canine myocardium and compare these parameters with histopathological changes. Twelve healthy male beagle dogs were enrolled and assigned to the high-dose prednisolone (P; n=6) and control (C; n=6) groups. The P group was treated with 2 mg/kg of prednisolone BID for 84 days. Clinical parameters were measured using echocardiography and non-invasive systolic blood pressure (SBP) measured before the initiation of synthetic corticosteroids and at 7, 28, 56, and 84 days after the start of medication. For histological evaluation, cardiovascular tissue was harvested from dogs in groups P (at the end of the medication period) and C (scheduled to be euthanized for unrelated reasons). In the P group, clinical changes including thickening of the left ventricular free wall (LVFW) and interventricular septum (IVS), decreased left ventricular (LV) diastolic function, and increased SBP were observed after the start of medication. During histological evaluation, fibrosis was observed in the LVFW and IVS in the P group. Furthermore, decreased glucocorticoid receptor (GCR) levels were observed in the LVFW, right ventricular free wall (RVFW), and IVS and increased mineralocorticoid receptor (MCR) levels were observed in the LVFW and RVFW in the P group compared with those in the C group. In conclusion, fibrosis may cause LV structural and functional abnormalities in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism. Furthermore, GCR downregulation and upregulated MCR might influence the myocardial fibrosis.

Journal of Veterinary Medical Science 83(2) 297-303 2021年This study aimed to evaluate changes in the vertical and fore-aft force generation of the hindlimbs in dogs with stifle orthoses. Custom-made orthoses were used on the right stifle joint. Force plate and marker data from four beagle dogs in trials without orthoses, with fixed orthoses, and with unfixed orthoses were collected. The vertical ground reaction force of the righside was increased with fixed orthoses and decreased with unfixed orthoses compared to that of gait without orthoses. When compared to that of gait without orthoses, the fore-aft ground reaction force changed with fixed orthoses but not with unfixed orthoses. It is suggested that the level of constraint of the orthosis affected the ground reaction force pattern.

PloS one 16(2) e0247410 2021年The aim of this study was to examine the effect of long-term locking plate fixation on the cortical bone of the canine radius. Locking compression plates were fixed to the left and right radius in dogs (n = 3). The left radius was fixed with a locking head screw (Locking Plate group, LP). The locking compression plate was compressed periosteally in the right radius using a cortex screw (Compression Plate group, CP). Radial bones from dogs that were euthanized for other purposes were collected as an untreated control group (Control group). After euthanasia at 36 weeks following plate fixation, radial bones were evaluated for bone mineral density and underwent histological analysis. Bone metabolic markers were analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Statistical analyses were performed for comparisons between groups. The LP group showed no significant difference in bone mineral density after plate fixation, whereas the CP group showed significantly lower bone mineral density. Histological analysis indicated that the number of osteoclasts and rate of empty lacunae increased significantly in the CP group relative to the Control and LP groups. qPCR analysis indicated increased expression of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 11 in the CP group, whereas Runt-related transcription factor 2, an osteoblast marker, was similar in all groups. The expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α in the CP group was also increased relative to that in the Control and LP groups. Thus, locking plate fixation is a biologically superior fixation method that does not cause implant-induced osteoporosis in the bone in the long term.

Veterinary Surgery 49(5) 860-869 2020年7月 査読有りOBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of durotomy as an adjunct to surgical decompression in dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation (TL-IVDH) and loss of deep pain perception (DPP) in the hind limbs. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 116) with TL-IVDH and loss of DPP treated with hemilaminectomy. METHODS: Signalment, surgical site, recovery rate, incidence of progressive myelomalacia (PMM), time elapsed from onset of paraplegia of the hind limbs to surgery (TPS), and the length of area of hyperintensity of the spinal cord on magnetic resonance T2-weighted images compared with L2 vertebral body length (LHT2) were compared between dogs treated with hemilaminectomy alone and those treated with adjunct durotomy. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to test the association between outcomes and the external view of the spinal cord parenchyma after durotomy. RESULTS: The percentage of dogs regaining ambulation was greater when durotomy was performed (56.9%) than when dogs were treated with hemilaminectomy alone (38.5%; P = .04). In the hemilaminectomy group, 14 dogs died of suspected PMM, while no PMM was detected in the durotomy group. Durotomy, breed, surgical site, and LHT2 influenced recovery. No association was detected between age, sex, body weight, and TPS and recovery. CONCLUSION: Performing a durotomy in combination with decompression improved the return to function and prevented PMM in our clinical setting. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Surgeons should consider durotomy in dogs with TL-IVDH and loss of DPP in hind limbs to improve surgical outcome.

Journal of feline medicine and surgery 22(12) 1098612X20924314-1237 2020年6月1日 査読有りOBJECTIVES: This study was performed to evaluate retrospectively the clinical signs, complications and postoperative outcomes of feline intracranial meningioma (IM) with concurrent cingulate, transtentorial and foramen magnum herniations. METHODS: The medical records and MRI scans of cats with IM and cerebral herniation were reviewed. Cases involving concurrent cingulate, transtentorial and foramen magnum herniations were included. Owners were contacted to obtain long-term follow-up information. RESULTS: Seven cats (four castrated males and three spayed females) met the inclusion criteria. Median age was 13.0 years (range 9.9-16.1 years) and median duration of clinical signs was 35 days (range 21-163 days). The clinical signs of cats with cerebral herniation included visual impairment (n = 5 [71.4%]), ataxia (n = 4 [57.1%]), impaired consciousness (n = 2 [28.6%]), head pressing (n = 2 [28.6%]), paresis (n = 1 [14.3%]), torticollis (n = 1 [14.3%]) and personality changes (n = 1 [14.3%]). Median tumour volume, cranial cavity volume and tumour volume: intracranial volume ratio before surgery were 3.37 cm3 (range 3.23-11.5 cm3), 32.6 cm3 (range 29.8-78.3 cm3) and 10.4% (range 5.3-35.3%), respectively. Median overall tumour excision rate was 90.6%. Preoperative intracranial pressure (ICP) ranged from 15 to 32 mmHg (median 29 mmHg). In all cases, the ICP dropped to 0 mmHg immediately after tumour removal. No adjuvant therapy was required after surgery. The median survival period was 612 days (range 55-1453 days). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The results of this study indicate that surgical treatment of rostrotentorial IM is effective and allows prolonged survival, even in cats with concurrent cingulate, transtentorial and foramen magnum herniations.

The Journal of veterinary medical science 82(7) 908-916 2020年5月25日 査読有りThe object of this study is to evaluate the long-term outcome of hind limb weight-bearing function and progression of stifle osteoarthritis (OA) after tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). Groups were classified by the degree of cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) damage and presence or absence of medial meniscus damage as macroscopically evaluated during surgery. Weight-bearing function was assessed via the peak vertical force (PVF), and OA progression was assessed via the radiographic OA score (OAS) preoperatively and 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months postoperatively. In all stifles, PVF was significantly higher within 6 months postoperatively than preoperatively, and this high ratio was maintained for 36 months. The OAS was significantly higher 24 months postoperatively than preoperatively in stifles with a partial CrCL tear, and significantly increased at each timepoint after 3 months postoperatively in stifles with complete CrCL rupture. The OAS remained consistently lower in stifles with a partial CrCL tear and no treatment of the medial meniscus than in stifles with complete rupture. Thus, after TPLO, the weight-bearing function improved in the early postoperative period and was maintained for as long as 36 months. Although OA progressed over time after TPLO, the progression was more gradual in stifles with partial tears than in those with complete rupture. Canine patients would benefit from earlier surgical intervention through development of technology that enables early detection of ligament degeneration.

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T 2020年5月15日 査読有りOBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe a new surgical method of segmental femoral ostectomy for the reconstruction of the femoropatellar joint (FPJ) in dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL) grade IV. STUDY DESIGN: The medical records of six dogs that underwent segmental femoral ostectomy to reconstruct the FPJ for MPL grade IV were retrospectively reviewed. The data included breed, age, body weight, comorbidities, history of orthopaedic abnormalities, pre- and postoperative radiographic findings, morphological indicators measured on three-dimensional computed tomographic multiplanar reconstruction images, surgical methods and postoperative complications. OUTCOMES: Eleven hindlimbs with MPL grade IV in six dogs underwent segmental femoral ostectomy to reconstruct the FPJ with the four basic surgical procedures. Six stifle joints with femoral varus deformity were treated by closing wedge ostectomy and segmental ostectomy, while five stifle joints were treated by segmental ostectomy alone. The mean resected femoral length was 11.7 mm. The mean resected femoral length relative to the preoperative femoral length was 14.3%. The stability and congruity of the FPJ was markedly improved, with an increased range of motion in all dogs compared with their preoperative status. CONCLUSION: Segmental femoral ostectomy was a useful treatment method for MPL grade IV with shortened quadriceps muscle length relative to the femoral length. Reconstruction of the FPJ is important for recovery of limb function.

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T 2020年5月14日 査読有りOBJECTIVES: Dogs with patella alta reportedly have a shorter extensor mechanism than normal dogs. The present study aimed to measure the length of the extensor mechanism and to assess the effect of limb position on the quadriceps muscle length (QML)/femoral bone length (FL) ratio. STUDY DESIGN: Three-dimensional computed tomography images were taken of 12 Beagle dogs. Each dog underwent computed tomographic imaging 24 times with different limb positions. The QML/FL was measured on each image, along with the hip flexion-extension, hip abduction-adduction and stifle flexion-extension angles. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the effect of these angles on the QML/FL. RESULTS: The QML/FL was increased with the hip extended (standardized partial regression coefficient 0.855 with linear plotting, 0.829 with log plotting) and with the stifle flexed (standardized partial regression coefficient 0.814 with linear plotting, 0.800 with log plotting). The partial regression coefficient of the hip abduction-adduction angle was small, indicating a small impact on the QML/FL. The 95% confidence range of the QML/FL with the hip extended and stifle flexed was 0.87 to 1.00 (mean ± standard deviation: 0.93 ± 0.03). CONCLUSION: The QML/FL was more influenced by joint angles when the hip was flexed or the stifle was extended. Hence, these positions should be avoided when evaluating the QML/FL so that the QML is less altered by slight positioning disparities.

Veterinary and comparative orthopaedics and traumatology : V.C.O.T 33(5) 301-307 2020年4月13日 査読有りOBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the changes in biomechanical characteristics following tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) using simulated manual tests. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-one stifles from healthy Beagle dogs that had undergone TPLO or had not (control) were first tested in the intact form, and then the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) was transected in each to provide four test situations: control-intact, control-CrCL-transected, TPLO-intact and TPLO-CrCL-transected. The stifles were then analysed using a robotic joint biomechanical testing system. The craniocaudal drawer, axial rotation and proximal compression tests were applied. RESULTS: The craniocaudal displacement during the drawer test was not significantly different between the control-intact and TPLO-intact. However, the displacement was significantly greater in the TPLO-CrCL-transected than in the control-intact. In the axial rotation test, the internal-external (IE) rotation was significantly greater in the TPLO-intact than in the control-intact. Similarly, the IE rotation was significantly greater in the TPLO-CrCL-transected than in the control-CrCL-transected. In the proximal compression test, craniocaudal displacement was not significantly different among the control-intact, TPLO-intact and TPLO-CrCL-transected. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that TPLO influences the tension of the collateral ligaments and might generate laxity of the tibiofemoral joint. Instability after the osteotomy might be associated with the progression of osteoarthritis.

American journal of veterinary research 81(4) 367-374 2020年4月 査読有りOBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of intervertebral distraction screw (IDS) fixation of the lumbosacral joint (LSJ) on the intervertebral foraminal area (IFA) and intervertebral stabilization of the LSJ and adjacent lumbar segments in dogs. ANIMALS: 7 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: Dorsal laminectomy was performed at the LSJ in each dog to expose the intervertebral disk. The IDS was then inserted into the L7-S1 disk. Computed tomography was performed before and after laminectomy and after IDS insertion (intact, laminectomy, and IDS conditions, respectively) to measure the intervertebral range of motion (ROM) and intervertebral distance (ID) at L7-S1, L6-7, and L5-6 with the LSJ in a flexed and extended position. The intervertebral foramina stenosis rate was calculated from the intervertebral foramina area in entrance, middle, and exit zones. Results were compared among conditions. RESULTS: The ROM at L7-S1 after IDS insertion was lower than that observed before and after laminectomy; no other differences were identified among conditions. With the LSJ in the flexed position, the ID at L7-S1 was larger after IDS insertion than before and after laminectomy; no other differences in ID were identified. In all evaluated zones, the stenosis rate was lower after IDS insertion than before and after laminectomy. No differences in ROM, ID, and stenosis rate were identified among conditions at L6-7 or L5-6. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that IDS fixation of the LSJ restricted lumbosacral ROM and prevented decreases in lumbosacral ID and IFA in healthy dogs. There were no changes at L6-7 and L5-6.

Veterinary Record Case Reports 2020年2月 査読有り
Two dogs with non-union fractures and osteomyelitis in the femoral diaphysis were referred to the authors’ hospital. During surgery, the defects were reconstructed using autologous cortical bones harvested from the contralateral femoral diaphysis. Graft fixation was performed by a double-plate technique in both cases. Autogenous cancellous bone was also grafted between the host bone and the graft in both cases. Antibiotics were administered for two to three weeks. In cases 1 and 2, no loosening of the implant or lameness was observed after 31 months and 10 months, respectively. Autologous cortical bone grafts are useful in reconstructing large-sized bone defects of the femoral diaphysis associated with non-union fracture and osteomyelitis.
