農業経済研究 = Journal of rural economics, 87(4) 353-358, Mar 25, 2016 Peer-reviewedLead authorCorresponding author
The objective of this study is to investigate relationships between environmentally friendly farming practices and farm size through a case study of the rice farming certification system and the 13 farms in Sado City. The main results are as follows. First, it seems that larger farms have an inclination to practice certificated farming and that the area a farm has has been annually increasing. Second, however, thus positive correlation does not exist for non-chemical farming, owing to weeding labor. Third, each farm practices either labor saving or mass input of the labor, depending on their form.

植生学会誌 : vegetation science, 30(1) 37-49, Jun 25, 2013 Peer-reviewedDistribution of wild boars, Sus scrofa Linnaeus, has drastically expanded in the last decade, and agricultural damages ensuing this expansion has been a serious problem in rural areas with mixed forest and fields, which represents Japan's cultural landscapes (Satoyama). Because agricultural activity in these areas has an important role in maintaining high biodiversity, solving the human-wildlife conflict in Satoyama areas remains a practical issue for the farmers and wildlife managers, but is also important for the ecosystem management of these culturally valuable landscapes. We carried out this study at southwestern part of Tochigi Prefecture, central Japan. Total of 86 releves were sampled in abandoned fields of the study area. We classified plant communities in the abandoned fields, and created 1/2500 land cover map reflecting the classification of plant communities. To investigate relationships between the distribution of wild boars and habitat types, we surveyed field sign of wild boars in November, February, May and August of 2010-2011. Six types of plant community were classified as follows: Digitaria ciliaris-Eleusine indica community (C1a), Setaria faberi-Erigeron philadelphicus community (C1b), Echinochloa crus-galli-Arthraxon hispidus community (C2), Artemisia indica var. maximowiczii-Potentilla hebiichigo community (C3a), Miscanthus sinensis-Solidago altissima community (C3b) and Pleioblastus chino community (C4). The feeding sign of wild boars tend to be found in the community types, C3a, C3b, and C4, throughout a year. In November and February, the feeding sign also tended to occur in the community types, C1a, C1b, garden and orchard. In May and August, it tended to occur in bamboo groves, and riverside. The resting sign tended to be found in the community types, C3b and C4, in August. Among the plant communities in abandoned fields, the management of the community types, C3b and C4, were important to reduce agricultural damages from wild boars in Satoyama landscapes.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE RESEARCH, 59(2) 167-177, Sep 20, 2012 Peer-reviewedOver the last century, human activity has caused significant changes to the activity patterns of many wildlife species. The wild boar is one species known to change its activity pattern with the intensity of human disturbance. We conducted camera trap surveys in two study sites, Shingo and Himuro, in Tochigi, central Japan. We investigated effects of two types of human disturbance on the activity pattern of a wild boar population: 'direct' disturbance related to hunting activity and 'indirect' disturbance related to daily human activity. In the hunting season, relative abundance indices (RAI) of wild boars significantly decreased, and the proportion of activity at night increased compared with the nonhunting season. RAI of wild boars at night decreased with increasing distance from the settlement, while RAI of wild boars during the day did not. Relative proportion of activity at night was higher in cameras at 0-200 m from the settlements, while no significant pattern was found in cameras far from settlements. Both direct and indirect effects of human activity had a significant effect on the activity pattern of wild boars. A decrease in human activity may result in the rapid expansion of wild boar populations, and re-evaluation of the human factor is important for more intelligent management of wild boar populations and to solve the human-wildlife conflict.

Agricultural marketing journal of Japan, 17(2) 82-88, Dec 31, 2008 Peer-reviewedLead authorCorresponding authorPractices of rural accommodations in ski resort areas are one form of rural tourism in Japan. It is considered that various practices coexist in such areas because of the diversity of accommodation management and needs. This paper reveals the condition and viewpoints about the coexistence of such types of rural tourism through a case study of the Hanasaku district, Katashina village, Gunma prefecture. Two practices exist at Hanasaku district: a mediation by Katashina agricultural cooperative and an accommodation practice. The former provides learning experiences on farming and rural activities to schools from metropolitan areas and has been one form of support for the accommodation management since about 20 years ago, providing tourists to many accommodations in the area. The latter is an attraction and service facility for tourists at the active accommodations which reflect facility preferences, meaning there are various services, such as local meals, guided walks and so on. Thus, while the two practices are different in terms of practice agents, positions in accommodation management and needs, they are coexisting in their objective and conclusion. There is a possibility of change in each accommodation with the change of managerial intention and household condition.
