園芸療法は，1990年代，アメリカで園芸療法を学んだ日本人が，アメリカの園芸療法を紹介し，実践をはじめた際に，当時のバブル経済崩壊後の心の癒しを求める価値観の拡大とガーデニングブームを背景にマスコミが注目したことで市民の関心が高まった(豊田1998)。その後，園芸療法の普及をめざす団体，教育機関が設立され，今日では国内で園芸療法を学んだ実践者が活躍し始めている。園芸療法が紹介され，団体や教育機関が設立された当時を園芸療法導入期とするならば，約20年を経過した現在は定着期にある。しかし，実践者が育っているといっても，日本で園芸療法が広く安定的に定着しているとはまだ言えない。定着期に求められることは，'園芸療法'に魅力を感じ期待を寄せる'関心層'の増加，続いて，園芸療法の概略がわかり，園芸療法土をめざしたり，ボランティアとして，あるいは職場の同僚や上司・経営者として応援してくれる'理解者'の増加，最後に園芸療法をしっかり学び園芸療法の臨床，研究，教育を担う'実践者'の増加が必要である(図1)。

In Japan, horticultural therapy (HT), therapeutic horticulture, animal assisted therapy (AAT), animal assisted activity (AAA), and forest therapy are conducted as Green care related activities. Concerning horticultural therapy, one prefectural academy, some universities, junior colleges, vocational schools, incorporated nonprofit organizations have their own curriculum to train horticultural therapists. The number of people has been gradually increasing who conduct horticultural therapy as specialists in medical, welfare services for the aged or people with disabilities, and the fields of education and landscape architecture. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
