    Abstract Adhesive layers were prepared using photoreactive polymer liquid crystals, and their application as dismantled adhesives based on the change in thermal properties associated with photoisomerization was investigated. Anisotropy in adhesive strength was successfully achieved by controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal using a polyimide alignment film. Furthermore, anisotropy in the adhesive strength due to photoalignment was investigated using the axis-selective photoreactivity of polymer liquid crystals to linearly polarized light.

    Abstract Among the various factors of polarization changes due to surface and internal structures of objects, the phenomenon of depolarization through light scattering is one of the most commonly occurring factors in visualization through polarization imaging. In the present study, depolarization due to surface light scattering over a broad wavelength range from the visible to IR regions was experimentally and theoretically elucidated. Using the polarization-probe-polarization-imaging system, we achieved successful visualization of depolarization based on surface structure differences at the nano-level while observing the instrument dial. The results of electromagnetic field analysis using the finite-difference time-domain method, incorporating surface structures observed through microscopic observation, revealed that Rayleigh scattering on the nano-scale uneven surface extends beyond depolarization.

    メソゲンとカルバゾール基を共に側鎖に持つ共重合高分子、低分子液晶、増感剤を成分とする複合体液晶で、光空間電界に起因する分子再配列型のフォトリフラクティブ効果が観察された。共重合高分子材料は、単体では液晶相を示さないが、適当な組成で、低分子液晶と混合することによって単相の液晶相を示し、高分子安定化型ホメオトロピック配向が得られた。2光波結合や回折格子形成といった基本特性の増感剤濃度依存性が調べられ、高効率のフォトリフラクティブ特性が確認された。

    We evaluated the azimuthal anchoring strength of the nematic liquid crystal cells whose inner surfaces were treated by the different kind of alignment techniques. One is the AT(Alignment Transcription) Method using polyimide films, and the other is Photo-induced Liquid Crystal Alignment Method using photoreactive SLCPs(Side-chain Liquid Crystalline Polymers). We found that the azimuthal anchoring strength of AT method cell decreased with increase in the transcription cell gap and the order was from 10 ^<-5> to 10<-4> J/m^2. The order of the anchoring strength of photo-induced LC alignment cell with the SLCPs was 10^<-6> J/m^2.

    We investigated the alignment behavior of low-molecular-weight (LMW) liquid crystal (LC) on photoreactive side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer (SLCP) films induced by linearly polarized (LP) UV light. The effect of the LP-photoreaction conditions and the spacer length between the biphenyl and cinnamoyl groups were examined. The alignment direction of LMW-LC was parallel to the electric vector of the incident LP-UV light in the beginning of the photoreaction and changed to perpendicular when the most of the cirmamoyl group had reacted. These are the consequence of the difference of the interaction between LMW-LC and the biphenyl group or the photoreacted cinnamoyl group.

    We presented a novel type of orientational photorefractive device, consisting of liquid crystals (LCs) sandwiched with photoconductive polymer films across the insulated polymer films. The photoexcited charges were generated in the photoconductive layers and eventually get trapped in the dark areas at the insulated polymer surfaces. The resulting space charge field reoriented the LC molecules and the holographic gratings were generated. The strong beam coupling effects were observed and the refractive index modulation Δn was estimated to be of the order of 1.1 × 10^<-3>. In addition, we demonstrated the all-optical light modulation using two beam coupling experimental arrangement.

    A novel type of orientational photorefractive material based on polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) doped with fulleren (C_<60>) was presented. The liquid crystals doped with C_<60> showed photoconductivity and the holographic grating formation mechanism was originated in the space charge field and resulting reorientation of liquid crystal molecules. The Raman-Nath type of gratings in the PDLCs with a dc applied filod were written by the photorefractive-like space charge field and the large refractive index modulation of the order of 10^<-3> was obtained. In addition, a stable memory effect of the reorientation was obtained for a 40 wt/60 wt (polymer/liquid crystals) sample.

    We synthesized methacrylate copolymers comprizing 2-cinnamoylethozy-4-biphenyloxyhexyl group and 4-cyanobiphenyloxyhexyl group. All synthesized copolymers showed a liquid crystallinity and can be photo-crosslink by UV irradiation. Linearly polarized (LP) UV irradaition on the eopolymer films resulted in an optical anisotropy of the film, especially at the LC temperature of the copolymers. The optical anisotropy were investigated by polarized UV and FT-IR measurements. The direction of the orientation of the mesogenic group was found to be parallel to the electrical direction of the incident LP-UV light. The reorientation of the non-reacted mesogenic group is occur during the LP-UV photoreaction. The induced birefringence Δn is in the range of 0.02-0.07. Because of the high photo-crosslinking, the LP-UV photoreacted film shows the orientational stability.

    Photo-crosslinkable thermotropic liquid crystalline block copolyetheresters with photoreactive hard segment of poly(hexamethylene p-phenylenediacrylate) and soft segment of poly(tetramethylene ether) were synthesized by melt polycondensation from n-butyl-p-phenylenediacrylate, hexamethylene glycol, and poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG, M-n = 1000-3000). The influence of molecular weight and composition of PTMG unit on the thermal behavior was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. All synthesized block copolymers show thermotropic liquid crystalline phase and can photo-crosslink by UV irradiation. Photoreaction of the copolymer thin film was carried out using Hg-UV light and investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy and a dynamic viscoelastic analyzer. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    液晶/高分子複合体の特性に及ぼす液晶と高分子の界面の相互作用、モルフォロジーの影響を検討した。まず、界面の相互作用を制御するために界面に中間層を有する複合体(Interface Controlled-Polymer/Liquid crystal Composite(IC-PLC))を提案した。界面層の組成、材料を変えることによって様々な特性を持った複合体を形成できた。この方法を用いて、高分子/液晶複合体を作製し、特性向上のためには、界面層にフッ素を含有させることが効果があり、この原因はアンカリング強度の測定から液晶と高分子の相互作用が弱くなったためであることがわかった。次に電場無印加時の光散乱特性を向上させるために、液晶ドロプレットを歪ませ、従来より薄い複合体膜にすることができた。これらの改善の結果、駆動電圧を6Vrms、ヒステリシスを0.2Vmls以下、応答速度を11msと特性が向上した。

    The relationship between the saponification rate of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and the electrooptical properties and morphology of the PVA/liquid crystal (LC) composite films was investigated. Light transmission dazing andthe LC droplet size were varied by changing the saponification rate or the blend ratio of two kinds of PVA withdifferent saponification rates because the refractive index and surface tension could be controlled by the saponification rate of PVA. The threshold voltage decreased with increasing saponification rate though the extrapolationlength was decreased. It was suggested that the electrooptical properties were strongly dependent on the dropletsize. © 1995 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

    A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/liquid crystal (LC) composite film with a low driving voltage of 6 V(rms), a low hysteresis of less than 0.2 V(rms), and a fast response time of 11 ms at the operating voltage of 6 V(rms) was formed from the emulsion composed of a mixture of water with methanol (WM-mixture), PVA, LC, and a photocrosslinkable mixture of nonaoxyethylenediacrylate (9EG-A) with perfluorooctylethylacrylate (FA-108). It was found in the composite film that the liquid crystal droplets, surrounded by a thin layer of the photocured polymer, were deformed as well as disordered, which enhanced light scattering.
