    Artificial reality is a cinfiguration of human interface presenting computer-generated virtual world to sense organs such as eyes, ears, skins, and so on. The major objective of artificial reality is to amplify human inteligence by natural communication between computer and human being. This paper presents brief history of artificial reality and current topics : force display and virtual space walking system. Force display is a virtual space operation system, combining real-time computer graphics and force feedback device. This paper describes issues of artificial reality technology and examples of currently developed systems. Expected application areas and future direction are discussed.

    The emotional state of the operator is closely related to physiological data. The authors have developed a system for physiological data acquisition to observe emotional responses among multiple operators. In due consideration of cost, resolution and invasion, cardiac pulse and the skin temperature of the face are selected as indices of the emotional state. The authors have developed a handy -sized device measuring every cardiac pulse interval, which enables us to carry out field experiments. Skin temperature is remotely measured by thermography and image processing. An experiment involving an audience in a theater has been done, applying the above-mentioned system. Results of the experiment indicate that emotional response is observed from the audience member's cardiac pulse interval and skin temperature of face.

    本論文では,画像メディアの画面設計を行う際のユーザ・モデルとして,人間の視覚情報処理の特性を定量的に表現する認知モデルの構築を行っている.本研究で提案する認知モデルは,ディスプレイ画面の情報量と,人間の視覚情報処理システムがそれの解釈を完了するまでに要する時間との関係を表すものである.ディスプレイ画面の情報量は,表示された図形パターンを線素に分解し,その総和を求めることによって表される.画面の情報量と認知所要時間の関係は指数分布に従うと仮定している.このモデルの応用として自動車用のナピゲーション・システムに用いられるグラフィック・ディスプレイをとり上げている.そして,地図画面の最適表示時間を認知モデルによって決定している.

    An ITV camera has an important role in teleoperation. This paper describes a method of controlling an ITV camera head according to the eye motion of the operator. The camera head has 3 degrees of freedom. Controllers of the camera head are destributed and built into the mechanical parts of each joint, so that they can be free from heavy wires. The eye motion of the operator is measured by image processing of the operator's face. An image of the face is obtained by a video camera mounted on the monitor display. The camera head rotates in the same direction as the visual line of the operator, so that the target is displayd at the center of the monitor display.

    This paper gives a method of analyzing human facial expressions by measuring the shape of the eye, brow and mouth, and of identifying emotional expressions. Facial expressions play a very important role in communication in our dailylife. Without any verbalized words we can often get considerable information about the emotional states of a person from their face. In order to analyze facial expressions, computer graphics of the human face is developed. In this experiment 4 parameters are selected. The automatic recognition of expressions is done by processing a digital image of a human face which is obtained by a video camera. Our final goal is to develope a method of identifying facial expressions which can be applied to Man-Machine interface.

    Graphic display is an effective device for an automobile driver to get information. A driver, however, must pay attention to the outer environment, so there is not enough time to see the display. This paper describes an effective method of presenting graphic information to an automobile driver.<br>First, the graphic display is activated by fixation of the driver. The visual performance is measured by image processing of the driver's face. The driver's line of vision is detected by a position of the eye.<br>Second, optimum quantity of displayed information is determined by a model of a human visual information processing. The model describes the relationship between complexity of a displayed image and required time for the driver to understand it. Graphic image is designed by this model, so that the driver can get the information at a glance.

    This paper describes the development of a gait rehabilitation system with a locomotion interface (LI) for stair climbing or descending. The LI consists of two 2 DOF manipulators equipped with footpads. These can move the user's feet while his or her body remains stationary. The footpads follow the prerecorded motion of the feet of a healthy individual. For gait training, the user progresses iteratively through successively more advanced modes. In this study, three modes, enforced stair climbing/descending, semi-voluntary stair climbing/descending, and real stair climbing/descending were used. Especially gait trajectories for the stairs climbing/descending were improved to realize valid weight shift motion. Comparisons were made between the modes for healthy individuals and a patient. The effectiveness of the system was examined using EMG and foot pressure data.

    This paper describes development of a haptic interface using a laser range finder. The system consists of a laser range finder, a 1 degree-of-freedom haptic apparatus and a computer. The haptic apparatus can generate a reaction force based on a distance to a remote object that is measured by the laser range finder. A user can feel the shape of a remote object by holding this interface and pointing the object. Three haptic rendering algorithms were developed. Through some experiments, the effectiveness of this system was confirmed.
