We present results of a search for unidentified line emission and absorption signals in the 2-12keV energy band of spectra extracted from Perseus Cluster core region observations obtained with the 5eV energy resolution Hitomi Soft X-ray Spectrometer. No significant unidentified line emission or absorption is found. Line flux upper limits (1 sigma per resolution element) vary with photon energy and assumed intrinsic width, decreasing from 100 photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr $^{-1}$ at 2keV to $<10$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr $^{-1}$ over most of the 5-10 keV energy range for a Gaussian line with Doppler broadening of 640 km/s. Limits for narrower and broader lines have a similar energy dependence and are systematically smaller and larger, respectively. These line flux limits are used to constrain the decay rate of hypothetical dark matter candidates. For the sterile neutrino decay rate, new constraints over the the mass range of 4-24 keV with mass resolution better than any previous X-ray analysis are obtained. Additionally, the accuracy of relevant thermal spectral models and atomic data are evaluated. The Perseus cluster spectra may be described by a composite of multi-temperature thermal and AGN power-law continua. Superposed on these, a few line emission signals possibly originating from unmodeled atomic processes (including Si XIV and Fe XXV) are marginally detected and tabulated. Comparisons with previous X-ray upper limits and future prospects for dark matter searches using high-energy resolution spectroscopy are discussed....

High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with Hitomi was expected to resolve the origin of the faint unidentified E=3.5 keV emission line reported in several low-resolution studies of various massive systems, such as galaxies and clusters, including the Perseus cluster. We have analyzed the Hitomi first-light observation of the Perseus cluster. The emission line expected for Perseus based on the XMM-Newton signal from the large cluster sample under the dark matter decay scenario is too faint to be detectable in the Hitomi data. However, the previously reported 3.5 keV flux from Perseus was anomalously high compared to the sample-based prediction. We find no unidentified line at the reported high flux level. Taking into account the XMM measurement uncertainties for this region, the inconsistency with Hitomi is at a 99% significance for a broad dark-matter line and at 99.7% for a narrow line from the gas. We do not find anomalously high fluxes of the nearby faint K line or the Ar satellite line that were proposed as explanations for the earlier 3.5 keV detections. We do find a hint of a broad excess near the energies of high-n transitions of Sxvi (E=3.44 keV rest-frame) -- a possible signature of charge exchange in the molecular nebula and another proposed explanation for the unidentified line. While its energy is consistent with XMM pn detections, it is unlikely to explain the MOS signal. A confirmation of this interesting feature has to wait for a more sensitive observation with a future calorimeter experiment.

We present the results from deep Suzaku observations of the central region of the Perseus cluster. Bulbul et al. (2014) reported the detection by XMM-Newton instruments of an unidentified X-ray emission line at an energy around 3.5keV in spectra for the Perseus and other clusters. They argued for a possibility of the decay of sterile neutrino, a dark matter candidate. We examine Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) spectra of the Perseus cluster for evidence in the 3.5keV line and other possible dark matter features in the 2-6keV energy band. In order to search for and constrain a weak line feature with the XIS, observations of the Crab nebula are used to evaluate the system's effective area. We found no line feature at the claimed position with a systematic line flux upper limit at a half (1.5eV in line equivalent width) of the claimed best-fit value by Bulbul et al. We discuss this inconsistency in terms of instrumental calibration errors and modeling of continuum emission. Future prospects for high-energy resolution spectroscopy with ASTRO-H are presented.

The SPICA coronagraph instrument (SCI) provides high-contrast imaging and moderate resolution (R<200) spectroscopy at the wavelength range from 3.5 to 27 mu m. Based on the planet evolutional model calculated by Burrows et al. (2003), SCI will search for gas giant planets down to one Jupiter mass around nearby young (1 Gyr) stars and two Jupiter masses around nearby old (5 Gyr) stars. SCI also allows to characterizing those planets of less than I Gyr by spectroscopic observations to reveal the nature of planetary formation and evolution.Focusing on the high sensitivity and high contrast at wavelengths longer than 10 pm, we show that SCI also allows us to directly image icy giant planets like Uranus and Neptune as well as gas giant planets around nearby early-type stars. In this paper, we compare the capabilities of SCI and the JWST coronagraphs and also discuss a new approach to answering questions concerning the formation and evolution of planetary systems through planet detection with SCI. The results from Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell2256 are presented. This cluster is a prototypical and well-studied merging system, exhibiting substructures both in the X-ray surface brightness and in the radial velocity distribution of member galaxies. There are main and sub components separating by 3'.5 in the sky and by about 2000 km s$^{-1}$ in radial velocity peaks of member galaxies. In order to measure Doppler shifts of iron K-shell lines from the two gas components by the Suzaku XIS, the energy scale of the instrument was evaluated carefully and found to be calibrated well. A significant shift of the radial velocity of the sub component gas with respect to that of the main cluster was detected. All three XIS sensors show the shift independently and consistently among the three. The difference is found to be 1500 $\pm 300$ (statistical) $\pm 300$ (systematic) km s$^{-1}$. The X-ray determined absolute redshifts of and hence the difference between the main and sub components are consistent with those of member galaxies in optical. The observation indicates robustly that the X-ray emitting gas is moving together with galaxies as a substructure within the cluster. These results along with other X-ray observations of gas bulk motions in merging clusters are discussed.

We studied the high temperature plasma in the direction of the Sculptor<br /> supercluster at z=0.108 with Suzaku. To investigate the present situation of the merging in the southern outer region of Abell 85, we carried out long (~100 ks) observations with Suzaku, and produced an X-ray hardness ratio map. We found a high hardness ratio peak in the east side of a subcluster located in the south of the cluster; an X-ray spectrum of the region including this peak indicates a high temperature of ~8.5 keV. This hot spot has not been reported so far. We consider that this hot spot is a postshock region produced by the infall of the subcluster from the southwest. By using the Rankine--Hugoniot jump conditions for shocks, the Mach number and the infall velocity of the subcluster are obtained as 1.5 +/- 0.2 and 1950^{+290}_{-280} km s^{-1}, respectively, in the case of merging with the subcluster from the southwest direction. By using the redshift difference between the A 85 and the subcluster obtained from optical observations, the angle between the line of sight and the direction of the motion of the subcluster is estimated to be 75^{+7}_{-8} degrees. We estimate the kinetic energy of the subcluster and the energy used for intracluster medium (ICM) heating to be ~10^{63} and \lesssim 8 \times 10^{60} erg, respectively. This shows that the deceleration of the subcluster by ICM heating has been negligibly small.

The results from Suzaku observations of the central region of the Perseus cluster are presented. Deep exposures with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer provide high quality X-ray spectra from the intracluster medium. X-ray lines from helium-like Cr and Mn have been detected significantly for the first time in clusters. In addition, elemental abundances of Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni are accurately measured within 10' (or 220 kpc) from the cluster center. The relative abundance ratios are found to be within a range of 0.8-1.5 times the solar value. These abundance ratios are compared with previous measurements, those in extremely metal-poor stars in the Galaxy, and theoretical models.

The results from Suzaku XIS observations of the relaxed cluster of galaxies Abell2052 are presented. Offset pointing data are used to estimate the Galactic foreground emission in the direction to the cluster. Significant soft X-ray excess emission above this foreground, the intra-cluster medium emission, and other background components is confirmed and resolved spectroscopically and radially. This excess can be described either by (a) local variations of known Galactic emission components or (b) an additional thermal component with temperature of about 0.2 keV, possibly associated with the cluster. The radial temperature and metal abundance profiles of the intra-cluster medium are measured within \sim 20 in radius (about 60% of the virial radius) from the cluster center . The temperature drops radially to 0.5-0.6 of the peak value at a radius of \sim 15'. The gas-mass-weighted metal abundance averaged over the observed region is found to be 0.21 +- 0.05 times solar.

About half of the baryons in the local Universe are thought to reside in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) at temperatures of 0.1-10 million K. Thermal soft excess emission in the spectrum of some cluster outskirts that contains OVII and/or OVIII emission lines is regarded as evidence of the WHIM, although the origin of the lines is controversial due to strong Galactic and solar system foreground emission. We observed the Coma-11 field, where the most prominent thermal soft excess has ever been reported, with Suzaku XIS in order to make clear the origin of the excess. We did not confirm OVII or OVIII excess emission. The OVII and OVIII intensity in Coma-11 is more than 5 sigma below that reported before and we obtained 2 sigma upper limits of 2.8 and 2.9 photons cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 for OVII and OVIII, respectively. The intensities are consistent with those in another field (Coma-7) that we measured, and with other measurements in the Coma outskirts (Coma-7 and X Com fields with XMM-Newton). We did not confirm the spatial variation within Coma outskirts. The strong oxygen emission lines previously reported are likely due to solar wind charge exchange.

We present results of 120 ks observation of a compact group of galaxies HCG~62 ($z=0.0145$) with Suzaku XIS and HXD-PIN\@. The XIS spectra for four annular regions were fitted with two temperature {\it vapec} model with variable abundance, combined with the foreground Galactic component. The Galactic component was constrained to have a common surface brightness among the four annuli, and two temperature {\it apec} model was preferred to single temperature model. We confirmed the multi-temperature nature of the intra-group medium reported with Chandra and XMM-Newton, with a doughnut-like high temperature ring at radii 3.3--6.5$'$ in a hardness image. We found Mg, Si, S, and Fe abundances to be fairly robust. We examined the possible ``high-abundance arc'' at $\sim 2'$ southwest from the center, however Suzaku data did not confirm it. We suspect that it is a misidentification of an excess hot component in this region as the Fe line. Careful background study showed no positive detection of the extended hard X-rays previously reported with ASCA, in 5--12 keV with XIS and 12--40 keV with HXD-PIN, although our upper limit did not exclude the ASCA result. There is an indication that the X-ray intensity in $r<3.3'$ region is $70\pm 19$% higher than the nominal CXB level (5--12 keV), and Chandra and Suzaku data suggest that most of this excess could be due to concentration of hard X-ray sources with an average photon index of $\Gamma=1.38\pm 0.06$. Cumulative mass of O, Fe and Mg in the group gas and the metal mass-to-light ratio were derived and compared with those in other groups. Possible role of AGN or galaxy mergers in this group is also discussed.

We carried out observations of the central and 20' east offset regions of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1060 with Suzaku. Spatially resolved X-ray spectral analysis has revealed temperature and abundance profiles of Abell 1060 out to 27' ~ 380; /h_70 kpc, which corresponded to ~ 0.25; r_180. Temperature decrease of the intra cluster medium from 3.4 keV at the center to 2.2 keV in the outskirt region are clearly observed. Abundances of Si, S and Fe also decrease by more than 50% from the center to the outer, while Mg shows fairly constant abundance distribution at ~ 0.7 solar within r < 17'. O shows lower abundance of ~ 0.3 solar in the central region (r~ 6'), and indicates a similar feature with Mg, however it is sensitive to the estimated contribution of the Galactic components of kT_1 ~ 0.15 keV and kT_2 ~ 0.7 keV in the outer annuli (r ~ 13'). Systematic effects due to the point spread function tails, contamination on the XIS filters, instrumental background, cosmic and/or Galactic X-ray background, and the assumed solar abundance tables are carefully examined. Results on temperature and abundances of Si, S, and Fe are consistent with those derived by XMM-Newton at r < 13'. Formation and metal enrichment process of the cluster are discussed based on the present results.

We report Suzaku observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1795 that extend to r(200) approximate to 2 Mpc, the radius within which the mean cluster mass density is 200 times the cosmic critical density. These observations roughly double the maximum radius at which X-ray emission has been detected from this object. We extend the declining cluster temperature profile beyond the radial limits (r similar to 1 Mpc) of existing Chandra and XMM data. These observations demonstrate Suzaku's capability for spatially resolved spectroscopy at very low surface brightness levels.

We present our XMM-Newton RGS observations of X Comae, an AGN behind the Coma cluster. We detect absorption by NeIX and OVIII at the redshift of Coma with an equivalent width of 3.3+/-1.8 eV and 1.7+/-1.3 eV, respectively (90% confidence errors or 2.3 sigma and 1.9 sigma confidence detections determined from Monte Carlo simulations). The combined significance of both lines is 3.0 sigma, again determined from Monte Carlo simulations. The same observation yields a high statistics EPIC spectrum of the Coma cluster gas at the position of X Comae. We detect emission by NeIX with a flux of 2.5+/-1.2 x 10^-8 photons cm^-2 s^-1 arcmin^-2 (90% confidence errors or 3.4 sigma confidence detection). These data permit a number of diagnostics to determine the properties of the material causing the absorption and producing the emission. Although a wide range of properties is permitted, values near the midpoint of the range are T = 4 x 10^6 K, n_H = 6 x 10^-6 cm^-3 corresponding to an overdensity with respect to the mean of 32, line of sight path length through it 41 Z/Zsolar^-1 Mpc where Z/Zsolar is the neon metallicity relative to solar. All of these properties are what has been predicted of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), so we conclude that we have detected the WHIM associated with the Coma cluster.

The Centaurus cluster (z=0.0104) was observed with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XIS) onboard the Suzaku X-ray satellite in three pointings, one centered on the cluster core and the other two offset by +-8' in declination. To search for possible bulk motions of the intracluster medium, the central energy of He-like Fe-K line (at a rest-frame energy of 6.7 keV) was examined to look for a positional dependence. Over spatial scales of 50 kpc to 140 kpc around the cluster core, the central line energy was found to be constant within the calibration error of 15 eV. The 90% upper limit on the line-of-sight velocity difference is |Delta_v|< 1400 km/s, giving a tighter constraint than previous measurements. The significant velocity gradients inferred from a previous Chandra study were not detected between two pairs of rectangular regions near the cluster core. These results suggest that the bulk velocity does not largely exceed the thermal velocity of the gas in the central region of the Centaurus cluster. The mean redshift of the intracluster medium was determined to be 0.0097, in agreement with the optical redshift of the cluster within the calibration uncertainty. Implications of the present results for the estimation of the cluster mass are briefly discussed.

The metallicity distribution in the Fornax cluster was studied with the XIS instrument onboard the Suzaku satellite. K-shell lines of O and Mg were resolved clearly, and the abundances of O, Mg, Si, S and Fe were measured with good accuracy. The region within a 4' radius of NGC 1399 shows approximately solar abundances of Fe, Si and S, while the O/Fe and Mg/Fe abundance ratios are about 0.4--0.5 and 0.7 in solar units. In the outer region spanning radii between 6' and 23', the Fe and Si abundances drop to 0.4--0.5 solar and show no significant gradient within this region. The abundance ratios, O/Fe and Mg/Fe, are consistent with those in the central region. We also measured the Fe abundance around NGC 1404 to be approximately solar, and the O, Ne and Mg abundances to be 0.5--0.7 times the Fe level. The significant relative enhancement of Fe within 130 kpc of NGC 1399 and in NGC 1404 indicates an origin in SN Ia, in contrast to the species O, Ne, and Mg which reflect the stellar metallicity. The mass-to-light ratios for O and Fe within 130 kpc of NGC 1399 are over an order of magnitude lower than those in rich clusters, reflecting the metal enrichment history of this poor cluster.

We searched for redshifted O emission lines from the possible warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) surrounding the cluster of galaxies A2218 at z=0.1756 using the XIS instrument on Suzaku. This cluster is thought to have an elongated structure along the line of sight based on previous studies. We studied systematic uncertainties in the spectrum of the Galactic emission and in the soft X-ray response of the detectors due to the contamination building up on the XIS filters. We detected no significant redshifted O lines, and set a tight constraint on the intensity with upper limits for the surface brightness of OVII and OVIII lines of 1.1 x 10^-7 and 3.0 x 10^-7 photons cm^-2 s^-1 arcmin^-2, respectively. These upper limits are significantly lower than the previously reported fluxes from the WHIM around other clusters of galaxies. We also discuss the prospect for the detection of the WHIM lines with Suzaku XIS in the future.
