    This study refers to the method of individually and continuously rearing juvenile sea urchins by students as the “My Sea Urchin Rearing” program. The program aims to foster understanding of sea urchin ecology, interest in marine life, and awareness of the human–ocean connection. It was implemented based on the belief that nurturing a life-respecting perspective toward animals is essential for promoting a sustainable society. Targeting first-year high school students enrolled in a basic biology course, the educational effects of the program were analyzed using questionnaire surveys and text mining of open-ended responses. The results indicate that observing various developmental stages of sea urchins enhanced students’ awareness of life. Additionally, the rearing experience helped them concretely consider ecological balance and environmental issues such as rocky shore denudation. The program was shown to promote changes in students’ views of animals, awareness of biodiversity conservation, and interest in marine invertebrate ecology.

    マイ・ウニ学習は、中学生でも、幼生から稚ウニへの変態までの観察できる教材である。さらに、稚ウニの飼育管理法を開発した。中学生は,マイ・ウニの学習を通して生命の大切さや海の生物への親しみを感じ、海と生きもの。海と人とのつながり意識する教育的効果が確認できたなどの成果を発表。

    Sea urchins are an excellent material for observing fertilization. However, metamorphosis from larval sea urchins to larval sea urchins is not easy. Therefore, we have developed teaching materials that allow even junior high school students to observe the metamorphosis of larval sea urchins and to learn about rearing of larval sea urchins from artificial insemination in a continuous and easy-to-understand manner for each student. This teaching material enabled students with little experience in sea urchin breeding to develop a view of life and a respect for life. In addition, we were able to increase interest in the ecology of sea urchins and the marine environment.

    小・中学校と地域の教育資源との間、学校間での緊密な連携の上で、地域人材を活用した観察・実験・実習や、複数の小・中学校の連携による研究授業や共同授業の実施、地域の教育資源を活用した教育活動の実践、小・中学校教員の指導力向上を目的とした教員研修の実施など、理数教育・科学技術理解増進に関する実践的な研究を行った。理科教育の推進のために木更津市の小・中学校がモデル校となり、木更津工業高等専門学校・かずさDNA研究所・お茶の水女子大学・などの大学や研究機関との連携を図り、科学実験講座の企画・実施を行った。各校が行ったプログラムは、事例集としてまとめ、活用できるようにガイドブックとして配布した。
