Report on research into the possible links bewteeen learners'

This paper summarized findings from experiments related the connections made by EFL readers between information in various modes. Special focus was on the need to re-assess the importance of skills and strategies training in the light of findings that suggest they interact beneficially with vocabulary development tasks and exercises.

Former research had identified a need to better understand the link between phonemic awareness and reading comprehension skills. So, this study measured learners' vocabulary size, phonemic distinction ability, and reading comprehension ability, all using well-known standard tests. The results, although only a small-scale investigation, suggest that phonemic awareness and accurate pronunciation may play a significant role in reading in English as a foreign language. This implies a need to provide pronunciation practice, even in reading skills classes.

Presentation of research conducted into the effect of illustrations with text on the EFL learner's reading comprehension. Analysis of how the illustrations affected cognitive processes involved in reading

This paper focused on implications of anomalies in research reeults from experiments on reading with and without illustrations, such as identical mean scores for both conditions, in the treatment group. Possible wider effects for focused strategy training than anticipated.

Brief general re-consideeration of all my research in this area to date, wwith particular reference to issues that are likely to be common in certain other Asian contexts (script related observations, for example).

この学会発表は日本の学生の書く文章には言語の異なったレベル(形式)が頻繁に混在する事実(例えば、フォーマルな(形式ばった)表現やインフォーマルな(打ち解けた)表現、さらには俗語に至るまで、そしてこのことが彼らの文章を読む人の解釈にどのような影響を与えているかを論じている。また、このようなスタイルの文章を書く推察される理由としては、インターネット(英語)、インフォーマルなブログやオンラインのスポーツコメンタリ一等の影響を挙げ、されにその具体例を示し、解決策を提起している。

日本の大学レベルでの英語学習者が、読解時に挿絵等を有効に活用することを明らかに怠っている点に著者の長年の研究は注目し、英語圏並びに日本におけるそれぞれの母国語の読解が、初心者にどの様に教えられているかを検討している。小学生時代の第一言語学習(日本語)における読解法が、後の第二言語学習(英語)の読解法に影響を及ぼしているかを、日英米の小学時代の読解教育を比較し、研究課題の原因を追究している。

日本人学生が直面する読解に関する問題点には､英文に付随する挿絵等を読んだり､書かれた情報に視覚的な情報を関連付けることの難しさが含まれているようである｡しかし､このことは一般的に日本の印刷メディアや文化の極端に視覚的な性質を考慮すると不可思議なことである｡この発表は2002年(8～9月)にバーミンガムのセントラルイングランド大学の夏期(芸術とデザイン)コースに出席した日本人学生のグループを対象に行われた研究の簡潔な説明である｡この研究は後に日本の学生たちに更に大きなスケールで行われる実験の試験的なものとして意図されたものである｡

バーミンガム大学大学院セミナーにおける研究発表。日本の学生(大学レベルの)がテキスト(文章)を読む時に、内容をより良く理解する為にはテキストに付随する挿入画にも着目し情報を得る読解法の必要性を提示する研究発表。

日本の大学生のEFL読解に関して、教師と学生の期待という観点から三例に及ぶ実験的な研究が書かれている。一般的に学生は異なった媒体や異質な形式からの情報を統合する事が苦手であり、この事はトップダウン処理法とボトムアップ処理法との両立が不得手である事に依ると思われる。このような問題は学生が購読クラスに期待する事と教師(特に英語を母国語とする)が学生に期待する事が両立しない事に起因すると結んでいる。

言語習得研究の立場から、英語読解能力の効果的開発法を具体的に提示した。英語読解能力においては同一の研究対象を2グループに分け、第1グループには言語習得研究における最新のEFL読解技術を教授し、第2グループには一切の教授を行わずに同一の読解テストを課した。(口頭研究発表、使用言語:英語)
