    OMOTENASHI is a 6U CubeSat launched by the first NASA SLS rocket. Its mission was to demonstrate that a CubeSat can make a semi-hard landing on the Moon. Tight resource constraints make it difficult to mount a heater and a radiator in a CubeSat, so passive thermal control is a prominent design feature of OMOTENASHI that resolves the technical difficulty. In November 2019, a thermal vacuum test was conducted. This paper discusses the thermal design and the test results. OMOTENASHI was launched by SLS rocket on November 16, 2022. After the SLS rocket separation, OMOTENASHI's attitude control malfunctioned so it could not generate power from its solar cells. Eventually, communications were lost and have not been restored. Brief telemetry data confirmed that the temperature monitor functioned correctly for 30 min. This paper reports the flight results of the thermal status during the first ground station pass. Also, a comparison between the analysis model and telemetry data is shown. Finally, based on its estimated trajectory, the future thermal profile of the spacecraft and the result of the search operation are discussed.

    SPACE TELESCOPES AND INSTRUMENTATION 2024: ULTRAVIOLET TO GAMMA RAY, PT 1, 13093, 2024  
    HiZ-GUNDAM is a future satellite mission whose mission concept was approved by ISAS/JAXA, and it is one of the future satellite candidates of JAXA's competitive medium-class mission. HiZ-GUNDAM will lead time-domain astronomy in 2030s, and its key sciences are (1) exploration of the early universe with high-redshift gamma-ray bursts, and (2) contribution to the multi-messenger astronomy. Two mission payloads are aboard HiZ-GUNDAM to realize these two scientific issues. The wide field X-ray monitors which consist of Lobster Eye optics array and focal imaging sensor, monitor similar to 0.5 steradian field of view in 0.5-4 keV energy range. The near infrared telescope with an aperture size of 30 cm in diameter performs simultaneous 5-band photometric observation in 0.5-2.5 mu m wavelength with Koester's prism for X-ray transients discovered by Wide Field X-ray Monitor. In this paper, we introduce the mission overview of HiZ-GUNDAM while the information contained herein may change in future studies.

    The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) project at JAXA officially started in 2018. Following the development of onboard components, the proto-flight test was conducted from 2021 to 2023 at JAXA Tsukuba Space Center. The spacecraft was launched from JAXA Tanegashima Space Center on September 7, 2023 (JST), and onboard components, including the science instruments, were activated during the in-orbit commissioning phase. Following the previous report in 2020, we report the spacecraft ground tests, the launch operation, in-orbit operations, and the status and plan of initial and subsequent guest observations.

    OMOTENASHI is a CubeSat that was launched by a NASA SLS rocket. Its mission was to demonstrate that a CubeSat could make a semi-hard landing on the Moon. A chemical propulsion system which provides high thrust and can be re-ignited is large and difficult to install on a CubeSat. Therefore, a small cold-gas jet makes orbit corrections with only a small Delta V. Moreover, a rocket motor with a high Isp and structural mass ratio is used for a lunar landing deceleration. The spacecraft consists of an orbiting module, a rocket motor, and a surface probe. This paper analyzes the trajectory design of the Moon landing and a method that increases the landing success rate under the tight constraints of the CubeSat. To reduce fuel and power consumption, the maneuver conditions during the lunar transition to reach the target landing site are evaluated based on several error factors. This study considers the trade-off between vertical and horizontal landings. Because active control is not possible for decelerating a rocket motor for the lunar landing, the optimal altitude at the starting maneuver is determined by considering such errors as attitude and timing. Finally, the paper discusses mission feasibility and the landing success rate.
