[Purpose] This study aims to evaluate a specific health guidance program focusing on individuals’ ‘strengths’ to consider effective programs in A City. [Methods] The researchers created, implemented, and evaluated a specific health guidance program that focuses on individuals’ ‘strengths.’ The program involved five sessions targeting groups with the following overall aims: (1) Enhance interest in own body, (2) Provide opportunities to reflect on oneself through discussions with others, (3) Find ways to take care of own body, (4) Discover own goals, (5) Focus on own strengths, and (6) Build connections for health promotion. Specific goals were also set for each session. An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted to evaluate the achievement of the aims and goals. [Results] A total of 194 people (103 males, 91 females) participated in the study. Analysis showed that the aims of the program and the goals for each session were largely achieved. However, the sixth goal, building connections for health promotion, was not fully achieved. In the first session, female participants had higher scores than males in the understanding of health check-up results. In the second session, which focused on dietary themes, females increased their interest in their bodies more than males did. When comparing the full and partially participating groups, the two groups showed no significant differences in age, gender, or participation category, and no significant correlation in the goal achievement levels. [Conclusion] The participants may have addressed their bodies without anxiety by focusing on their desired lifestyles and strengths. Building connections needs a strategy that allows people to feel a sense of connection by stimulating affection for the community and utilizing existing networks and ICT.

Objectives: This study was conducted to clarify actual and perceived certified nurse specialist (CNS) activities in psychiatric mental health nursing who concurrently serve as university faculty members as well as the issues involved in CNS activities while they concurrently serve as university faculty members. Methods: We conducted a questionnaire survey, which was created by us, of 29 CNS in psychiatric mental health nursing affiliated with universities whose names are open to the public on the websites of the Japanese Nursing Association and graduate schools that conduct specialized nursing education. Simple tabulation and qualitative analysis of the questionnaire responses were carried out. Results: Responses were obtained from 21 individuals (response rate: 72.4%). With regard to the years of experience in performing CNS activities before becoming faculty members, it was found that 9 individuals had<5 years of experience (42.9%), and 16 individuals were active CNS while being faculty members (76.2%). We found that CNSs with concurrent posts as faculty members had less experience as a CNS and that their core role as a CNS was consulting, for e.g. Discussion: It was suggested that drawing a career path as a CNS while holding concurrent posts as faculty members and continuing education from graduate schools is needed. Furthermore, it was thought that the important role of CNSs who are faculty members is to promote practices and education suited to societal needs as well as conduct research activities to be able to recommend policies.

[Purpose] To clarify the impact of COVID-19 prevention measures on participants in the Program of Healthy Community Life for Older Adults and the resulting changes in their physical conditions and daily lives. [Methods] Analyses were performed on the 13 participants (all female, average age = 80.5 years) whose data on physical measurements and daily lives were available at all three time-points: before and six months after the program, and at the time of its resumption. [Results] In the comparison between the three time-points, significant changes were observed in body weight, bone density and two-step test values. For body weight, a decrease was seen between before intervention and time of resumption, with mean values changing from 51.4kg to 49.1kg and to 51.2kg (p = .013). For bone density and two-step test values, an increase was observed between before and 6 months after intervention, with mean values of bone density and two-step test changing from 66.0g/cm2 to 76.0g/cm2 and to 73.2g/cm2 (p = .013), and from 0.9 to 1.1 and to 1.0 (p = .018), respectively. The numbers of respondents who said they “had no problem with physical condition” and those who stated they “refrained from going out or frequency of going out decreased” were the same, but half of them were “aware of weakness in legs,” some being hospitalized for broken bones after falling. [Conclusion] The suspension of the program for more than six months due to COVID-19 pandemic caused a decrease in the frequency of going out and motor function in the participating older adults. In the future, it will be necessary to develop a new method to enable older adults to engage in activities and social interaction even under infection control measures, and to implement continuous support activities for older adults living in the community.
