Smart Materials and Structures 30(6) 065014-065014 2021年6月1日 査読有り筆頭著者責任著者Abstract We propose and demonstrate a novel method to enhance vibration harvesting based on surge-induced synchronized switch harvesting on inductor (S3HI). S3HI allows harvesting of a large amount of energy even from low-amplitude vibrations by inducing a surge voltage during the voltage inversion of a synchronized switch harvesting on inductor (SSHI). The surge voltage and the voltage amplification from the conventional voltage inversion improve energy harvesting. S3HI modifies SSHI by both rewiring the circuit without adding components and using a novel switching pattern for voltage inversion, thus maintaining the simplicity of SSHI. We propose a novel switching strategy and circuit topology and analyze six methods that constitute the S3HI family, which includes traditional S3HI and high-frequency S3HI. We demonstrate that the six methods suitably harvest energy even from low-amplitude vibrations. Nevertheless, the harvestable energy per vibration cycle depends on the switching pattern and storage-capacitor voltage. The use of the proposed switching strategy, which allows energy harvesting before energy-dissipative voltage inversion, substantially increases the harvestable energy per vibration cycle. In the typical case considered in this study, the said increase is on the order of 11%–31% and 15%–450% compared to the traditional and existing high-frequency S3HI methods, respectively, depending on the storage-capacitor voltage. Additionally, the proposed circuit can be used as a traditional circuit. It could be considered a promising alternative to S3HI methods owing to its potential auto-reboot capability, which is not found in traditional S3HI circuit.

2001年4月This paper shows the effectiveness of a semiactive vibration isolator filled with liquid-crystal type electro-rheological (ER) fluid for disturbances generated by momentum-wheels. The principal characteristics of an ER isolator was measured in dynamic tests, and a mathematical model of the isolator was proposed. Two control laws for semiactive approach were proposed. Numerical simulation results indicated that the proposed semiactive control produced much better isolation performance than a passive system.

COLLECTION OF THE 41ST AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC STRUCTURES, STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, AND MATERIALS CONFERENCE AND EXHIBIT, VOL 1 PTS 1-3 2000年 AMER INST AERONAUTICS & ASTRONAUTICSA formulation for simultaneously optimizing a passively damped structure and an active control system has been developed. A viscoelastic material (VERI) was utilized for enhancing passive damping of the structure. The formulation is applied to designing a free-free sandwich beam composed of three layers; that is, a simplified model of a beam-like space structure. The middle layer is made of the VEM in order to suppress elastic vibration modes passively. To stabilize the attitude and to actively suppress the elastic vibration modes, an active attitude-controller is mounted on the structure. The optimized costs indicate that optimization of the viscous passive damping is useful not only for reducing total system cost of the structure and the active controller but also for improving stability robustness of the closed-loop system.

Collection of Technical Papers - AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference 1999年4月To semiactively suppress the vibration of space truss structure, a variable damper was fabricated with liquid-quartz, which was a type of ER fluid. The principal characteristics of a liquid-quartz variable damper were measured in quasi-static tests, and a simple mathematical model of the damper was proposed. Based on the mathematical model of the damper and the LQR theory, two kinds of semiactive on-off control laws were proposed. The effectiveness of the semiactive vibration suppression with the liquid-quartz type ER fluid variable damper was investigated by numerical simulations in comparison with a particle-dispersion type ER fluid variable damper which was previously fabricated and tested by Onoda et al.1. Simulation results indicated that the most of the proposed control laws result in much higher performances than that of optimally tuned passive system, and simulation results also demonstrated that the liquid-quartz type ER fluid variable damper were superior to the particle-dispersion type ER fluid variable damper from the view point of amplitude-dependence. Semiactive vibration suppression experiments of a ten bay truss beam with the liquid-quartz ER fluid variable damper were also performed, and the experiment results also demonstrated that vibration was suppressed nicely.

1998年4月This paper proposes and investigates a method to enhance ER-fluid variable dampers for semiactive vibration suppression. The ER-fluid dampers studied in this paper can be modeled as a variable friction damper. The friction in the damper is an increasing function of the absolute value of the voltage applied to the electrode of the damper. Generally, the friction is not zero even when no voltage is applied. Semiactive vibration suppression is to control the friction such that vibrations damp quickly. Therefore, to suppress large amplitude vibrations to small amplitude, the friction needs to be varied through a large range. In other word, the ratio of the maximum and minimum values of the frictional force needs to be large. To increase the ratio by decreasing the minimum frictional force, this paper proposes to excite a high-frequency vibration of the electrode. The effectiveness of the electrode vibration for the reduction of the minimum frictional force is demonstrated in this paper by both static experiments and semiactive vibration suppression experiments. The results of semiactive vibration suppression experiments indicate that the minimum frictional force is reduced by the electrode vibration by factor of 1/3-1/2.

Collection of Technical Papers - AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference 1998年1月1日A formulation of simultaneous optimization a passively damped structure and active controller has been attempted. In this study, viscoelastic materials (VEMs) have been utilized as one of device to enhance damping passively. The formulation needs to adopt the modeling method that is capable of designing not only the viscous passive damping but also the active controller adequately. For such requirement, the time domain approach that results the accurate model on the time domain is employed for the modeling of the viscoelastic structures. In order to create the reduced order model (ROM) for system design, the complex modal analysis has been developed, and the ROM is obtained with using both truncation and the balanced realization method. The accuracy of the ROM has been investigated based on a cantilevered partially viscoelastic beam example. The numerical results indicate that the time domain approach is more appropriate than the modal strain energy (MSE) method for creation of the ROM. Moreover, the strategy to derive the ROM is included into the formulation of simultaneous optimization of a viscoelastic structure and active controller. The formulation is applied to the design of a sandwich beam like space structure. The optimization results indicate that the optimization of viscous passive damping is useful for the total system cost reduction.
